Dutch carrier Transavia Airlines will this year celebrate its 60th anniversary, and it is planning to mark this in a major way by painting a brand new aircraft in a retro livery.

History of Transavia

Transavia, founded in 1965, is one of the Netherlands’ most prominent low-cost carriers, known for its evolution from a small charter operator to a major player in the European aviation market. Initially established as a subsidiary of the Dutch airline KLM, Transavia’s original focus was on providing holiday charter flights, serving leisure destinations primarily from the Netherlands.

The airline’s strategic shift towards low-cost operations began in the early 2000s, with Transavia adopting a more competitive model that allowed it to expand its network across Europe. This shift was part of a broader trend within the European aviation industry, where low-cost carriers like Ryanair and easyJet were rapidly gaining ground.

By the 2010s, Transavia had firmly established itself as a leading low-cost airline, offering scheduled flights alongside its traditional charter services. The airline also began to broaden its offerings to include both short- and medium-haul routes, providing affordable connections to major European cities and Mediterranean destinations.

Transavia’s fleet, composed mainly of Boeing 737s, has grown significantly, positioning the airline as a cost-effective alternative to legacy carriers. In recent years, the airline has strengthened its position within the Air France-KLM Group, expanding operations and increasing its focus on customer service innovation. It is now actively taking delivery of Airbus A320neo family aircraft as its future fleet.

Retro Jet Announced

Transavia will take delivery of a brand new Airbus A321neo aircraft this summer which is painted in a retro livery from the airline’s past.

The airline says:

This livery is inspired by the branding designed by Dutch designer Thijs Postma in 1966. He was the creator of the iconic green colour and the large, black T on the fuselage and tail.

Many enthusiasts and travellers will remember these earlier days of Transavia and agree that this early livery harks back to the style of the time.

Despite its historic exterior appearance, the new A321neo will feature the latest technology and interior cabin style of its other jets.

CEO Marcel de Nooijer states: “Celebrating our 60th anniversary is a moment to reflect on what we have achieved together. The arrival of a new Airbus in retro livery is our way of looking back with pride on what has brought us and where we are now. While at the same time looking ahead to a quieter future thanks to our fleet renewal.”
