Pictures of a new special livery to promote the 100th anniversary of Delta Air Lines have been teased, and enthusiasts who have spotted the plane have also shared their pictures online.

History of Delta

Delta Air Lines traces its origins back to 1924, when it was founded as Huff Daland Dusters in Macon, Georgia, a crop-dusting operation designed to help farmers control pests.

In 1928, it was rebranded as Delta Air Service, offering passenger flights between Dallas and Jackson, Mississippi. The airline’s name was inspired by the Mississippi Delta region.

Over the decades, Delta expanded its routes and fleet, becoming a major player in the U.S. airline industry. Post-World War II, Delta became a pioneer in air travel, introducing jet aircraft like the DC-8. Mergers with companies like Northeast Airlines and Western Airlines throughout the 1980s and 1990s solidified its position as a global carrier.

Today, Delta is a leading airline, with an extensive network serving over 300 destinations worldwide, while remaining a symbol of innovation and resilience in aviation history.

Delta’s 100th Anniversary Plane

The 100th anniversary of the founding of Delta (albeit as Huff Dalaand Dusters) is a major milestone for the airline, and it appears it will be celebrating in style with a brand new special livery plane.

The airline recently teased these images of what appears to be a new Airbus A350-900, with a variety of concept liveries painted on.

However, eagle-eyed viewers will notice that at least one of the images is a genuine photograph and not mocked-up.

Another post online has shown the real aircraft, now fully painted (source unknown), and here it is:

The aircraft is F-WZNK, which will become N527DN when delivered.

Delta Air Lines The Book

Last year I produced a brand new book on Delta Air Lines for Key Publishing. The book charts the 100 year history of this airline, which is now one of the largest in the world. It looks at the early days as a crop dusting organisation, and its growth into the giant carrier of today. Along the way it merged with various other airlines, like Northeast Airlines, Western Airlines, Northwest Airlines and Chicago & Southern. The book looks at each of those in detail, too.
