I had reason to pass through Hamburg’s Fuhlsubüttel Airport on a work trip last week. It was my first time visiting the airport, despite spending a lot of time in Germany in the past.
I flew with KLM from the UK via Amsterdam, sampling their EMB-190 aircraft for the first time. They’re lovely to fly on, and very comfortable. Noisier than a Fokker 70/100 though!
Hamburg Airport has two terminals, both inside a very sleek and modern building occupying one corner of the airfield. In the check-in hall of Terminal 1 you can head upstairs to the food terrace area, which doubles as a viewing area overlooking the entire airfield. Be sure to note the preserved Lufthansa Boeing 707-430 off to your right!
Once through security, all gate areas have views of aircraft parked in the immediate surroundings, and across to the remote stands. Beyond these you have some views of aircraft using Lufthansa Technik and the biz jet ramps. Both runways are in view.
Sadly I didn’t have time to explore the surroundings of the airport, so I didn’t make it to any of the viewing areas. If you know of any good ones, why not leave a comment below?
