Embraer’s new E-Freighter has gained type certification, shortly before arriving at the Farnborough Air Show, where the company hopes to gain orders for the new type.

Based on the Embraer 190 E-Jet, the freighter is a conversion from a passenger jet and provides airlines with an option to acquire converted freighters for the growing freight and package industry.

Embraer is competing against similar products from Airbus and Boeing, but is confident in a market for the aircraft with hundreds currently flying around the world as passenger jets which could be converted.

Certification has been received by the National Civil Aviation Agency of Brazil (ANAC), with EASA and FAA certification expected later in the year.

The aircraft arrived at Farnborough wearing its brand-new paint scheme, alongside the E195-E2 “Profit Hunter” prototype, where Embraer hoped to secure sales from airlines at the week-long gathering.

Arjan Meijer, President and CEO, Embraer Commercial Aviation, said, “The E-Freighter marks Embraer´s first step into the cargo market. After celebrating the first flight in April, it’s a further boost to receive type certification for our newest program now. The aircraft has been very well received this week by potential customers seeing our E-Freighter for the first time in Farnborough. This is a segment that has tremendous potential, and gives a new life to the earliest E-Jets that are just now moving into the typical replacement phase.”

To date ten aircraft have been ordered, by Nordic Aviation Capital.
