Out this month is the new book on Delta Air Lines by AirportSpotting.com editor Matt Falcus.

Published by Key Publishing in their Airlines Series (this is Volume 20), the book is heavily illustrated and takes you on a journey from the founding of Delta as a crop dusting business in 1925, to becoming one of the largest airlines in the world today.

With a fleet of more than 900 aircraft serving destinations all around the world, it is also one of the world’s largest.

A History of Delta

The history of Delta Air Lines reveals an inspirational account of how one man saw an opportunity to create a business in the early days of aviation, and from it, one of the most influential air carriers evolved.

Founded as Huff Daland Dusters in 1925, the business was established to provide an agricultural service tackling the boll weevil using airborne spraying aircraft. Soon opportunities came about to expand into airmail routes and passenger operations, and the rest is history.

Throughout its history it has pioneered many new aircraft types, include many from the Douglas and McDonnell Douglas stable.

It has also developed one of the world’s largest airport hub operations at its Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson base, where hundreds of its aircraft pass through every day.

The Airlines that Became Part of Delta

Along the way, the growth of Delta Air Lines was fast-tracked thanks to it merging with, or purchasing, other important airlines.

These included the likes of Chicago & Southern, Northeast Airlines, Western Airlines and Northwest Airlines.

Each addition added to the route network and fleet of Delta, which sucessively became larger and took on a wider network of flights.

It also curiously led to flying the Douglas DC-9 again in 2008 after retiring it back in 1993! This was following the merger with Northwest Airlines, which had retained its fleet of trusty DC-9s in service, and saw them repainted into Delta’s colours.
