The first Airbus A321XLR has been delivered to launch customer Iberia.

The aircraft, which marks a leap in the capabilities of the A320neo family, offers an impressive range of up to 4,700nm, with a 30% lower fuel burn per seat compared to other previous generation aircraft in the single-aisle category.

With over 500 of the type on order, the A321XLR is set to become a big part of travel for many of us all around the world.

Having completed its maiden flight in June 2022, the type has undergone testing and certification, before this significant moment could be reached.

Previously, Iberia’s partner Aer Lingus was set to become the launch customer. However, a switch earlier this year meant the first delivery became destined for the Spanish national airline.

Iberia’s A321XLR Plans

Iberia plans to use its Airbus A321XLR fleet on transatlantic routes out of its Madrid base.

Initial destinations include Boston and Washington Dulles, which will begin later this year.

The airline is also planning to use the type on some shorter schedules to both London Heathrow and Paris Charles de Gaulle over the coming weeks as its crews gain familiarity with the new type.

In all, Iberia has eight A321XLR aircraft on order, which will operate alongside older generation A321 aircraft, and complement its A330 and A350 fleets on long-haul services.

Marco Sansavini, CEO & Chairman at Iberia, said: “We are very proud to be the launch airline for this new Airbus aircraft. The A321XLR will allow us to reach new destinations, operating transoceanic routes and doing so in a more efficient way.”

Christian Scherer, CEO Commercial Aircraft at Airbus, said: “Five years in the making, the newest member of the Airbus family is all set to join its first operator, Iberia. The A321XLR will enable countless new non-stop destinations; it truly opens a new chapter in air connectivity. It is another proud “first” for all of us at Airbus in our constant quest to innovate and bring value to our customers. We are pleased to share this special moment with a special customer: gracias y felicidades Iberia.”
