Homeland Security Stance on Plane Spotting?

I saw this posted on a number of mailing lists recently, regarding the stance Homeland Security in the USA take towards plane spotters. Perhaps it will be useful if you’re planning a spotting trip to the USA soon.

The Homeland Security officer who had spoken to a spotter had stated: “There is no problem with spotting at US airports. We (homeland security) understand tail spotting, but before you start spotting please contact the airport police and let then know where you are and what you are doing. You will probably get a visit at some time from the local police, but it is all good natured”.

So, a couple of minutes’ effort will save us and local authorities from any misunderstandings.

next it will be let the police know you are going to the supermarket for a carton of milk….come on guys get a grip….u promote democracy and freedom and criticise those who dont have it like Russia, but i would actually say you are becoming less free as a country than them….seems the terrorists have won by turning the US into a Russian style police state

Paul’s comments are ridiculous. It’s apparent he is ill-informed.

Well I was told at KSTL that it was not legal to spot because I was on “airport property”, I was on a public road next to a golf course where there is no “no parking” or no “No Trespassing” signs up whatsoever, and yet it is trespassing and the airport police are not very nice about it, so whats homeland security have to say about THAT one ?

and the other thing was, I was more than half a mile from the perimeter fence of 12R and a quarter mile from the fence on 29/11..what is going on in the world today that a person cannot sit on a turnoff from a public road and watch an airport ?

I have to admit that at some places it is getting silly. Yes there needs to be security but all this paranioa needs to stop allthough i don’t think it will at some of these places.
