London Heathrow airport has opened a new viewing area in Terminal 4, called View Heathrow.
The room offers views over the southern runway (09R/27L), the stands at Terminal 4, and some distant stands at other terminals. It also boasts a view of the stored British Airways Concorde (G-BOAB) which remains at Heathrow.
The viewing area was created out of an old lounge, and sadly is only available to airside passengers who have passed through security (with a boarding card). But if that’s you, it’s an excuse to check in a few hours early to enjoy the view.
From the pictures it looks like photography is possible, albeit through glass. You will enter the room through a faux aircraft door and stairway, and it is free to use the room at any time the terminal is open.
Have you used the new viewing area? Why not post some pictures of it on our Facebook page!
Visitors to View Heathrow can get involved with the airport’s social media team by hashtagging their spectacular Instagram pics and Twitter comments using #ViewHeathrow.

When are they going to open something landside in T2 would be good
The old queens building was super and you could get food and drinks plus aviation spotting gear also.
If the airport ran a members security system like Birmingham it could benefit it with the spotters being another pair of eyes. I do think it is time for us to have a better location.
I used to love visiting the old queens building it was a sad day when the viewing area closed.wish there was somewhere now to view planes at heathrow.
I agree with thew comments !

[…] London Heathrow airport relented recently and installed a new viewing area for plane spotting (here’s our report about its opening). The major drawback, however, was that it is located in the departures section of Terminal 4, so […]
It was a very sad day when the old Queens Building viewing area closed,as a child I used to go there very often with mum,we spent many hours watching the planes .you could always get something to eat and drink and you could spend as much time as you wanted there. The highlight for me was waiting to see the Aer lingus flight arrive or take off My uncle was one of the pilots back then it was wonderful watching him come down those stairs in his uniform.Unfortunately the children of today will never get this close to the planes unless their traveling on one .so much for progress eh!
Thanks for the comment Barbara. Yes, it’s such a shame those days are gone and people can rarely get up close to aircraft at airports without a ticket any more.
