FedEx Retires Last A310

Yesterday marked the end of Airbus A310 operations for FedEx Express, the large freight carrier which has an extensive global network.

N808FD made its final journey from the FedEx Memphis hub to Southern California Logistics at Victorville, CA for storage and presumably scrapping. It follows in the footsteps of other A310s from the airline’s fleet.

The airline began taking on second hand A310s in 1994 and has operated them mostly on domestic flights within the US ever since.

N808FD, an A310-324, was originally delivered to Pan Am in 1987 and also flew for Delta, Air India, Aeropostal and Khalifa Airways. It joined FedEx in 2004.

Now, with the last example gone, FedEx has only a diminishing fleet for Airbus A300s and McDonnell Douglas DC-10/MD-10 as part of its older fleet, plus MD-11 freighters and a growing fleet of second hand Boeing 757-200s and new-build 767-300s and 777s.

There are very few airlines still flying Airbus A310s globally. Examples include Iran Air, Mahan Air, and Air Transat, who will retired the type this year.
