Sad news for Bristol – its Filton airfield is to close at the end of 2012.
It has been in use since 2010 and is located much closer to the city than Bristol’s main airport, Lulsgate. Filton has been used by BAe and Airbus in recent years, and is also a popular place for biz jets to visit.
The site has also been used for maintenance work on airliners and storage, making it quite interesting to the enthusiast.
BAe and Airbus are now looking at a smooth transition to new facilities around the closure time of the airport. The site is likely to be developed further as an industrial park. What this means for the preserved Concorde aircraft at the airport, we are not sure. Hopefully it will still be kept on the site and open to the public.
